Lucid dreaming occurs when you become aware that
you are dreaming. Often this realization is triggered by the dreamer
noticing an unlikely occurrence in the dream, such as meeting
someone from far away in a strange place, flying, or creating
objects with their mind. Immediately after you realize that you are
dreaming the scene often expands and gets enriched with more vivid
colors. You are now free to explore remarkable worlds limited only
by imagination, and now not just as an actor, but also to some
degree as a producer and director. Sometimes however the dream may
be interrupted as soon as you realize that you are dreaming.
How do lucid dreams happen?
Studies have shown that even though most of the body's muscles are
de-activated during REM sleep the eye muscles are not. Several
studies have shown that the eyes (and to some extent other
physiological responses) can be brought under conscious control by a
dreamer who realizes that he or she is dreaming.
In order to check whether you are having a lucid dream try asking
yourself if you are dreaming or try touching something in the dream.
Lucid dreaming can be fun because if you know that you are dreaming
you are free to do anything that you want. You can act out everyday
situations and do anything you feel like thus relieving yourself of
a great deal of stress.
